A2G3: Brighton Evaluation Post

We went to Brighton with the intention of experimenting with shot angles, colour and lighting, in the form of a montage of our adventures on the day, a format we are dubbing a "funtage". Here is the video we made of the day:

We also made a video diary at the end of the day documenting our thoughts and opinions about the day in an evaluation.

Where did we go and what were our aims?
  • We went to the city of Brighton on Thursday the 18th of September.
  • Our aim was to utilise the location and practice different camera techniques, such as close ups and tracking shots. We agreed beforehand that we were not going to film the actual music video there, as we firstly had not agreed on a concept nor had we any intentions of shooting in Brighton itself.
What did we achieve?
Underbelly of the pier
  • Our choice of filming on the pier was undoubtedly the best choice, as we were allowed to film on the dodgems and it gave us an opportunity to film both POV shots from behind the dodgems and to create a unique form of tracking shot.
  • The low angle shot of Alex riding his stickboard past the camera in near the beginning of the video worked well to add to the vibe of the video.7
    • This vibe was further enhanced by the time lapse sections and the conventional shots of Brighton itself, examples being the great ferriswheel near the pier, and the pier itself.
  • The tracking shots using the fig-rig were good, although there was some level of shakiness now and then. This could be counteracted with a future modification of the fig-rig.
  • Some of the locations worked well for composite shots, such as the shot of the underbelly of the pier.
  • We also achieved some shots following the rule of thirds, notably the shot with Isaac and the eye-patched pirate (shown below).
A spitting image.
What problems/obstacles did we encounter?
  • Though we managed to get some footage from inside the arcade halls, it was prohibited and we therefore had to be subtle about the filming.
  • In post-production, we realised that we lacked enough filler shots, and had to make do with a still at the end of the video.
  • Furthermore, in post-production, the computer that we were working on was so slow that we were delayed significantly and thus were behind schedule. Isaac had to edit the film at home before it was finished.
What did we learn that we can take to our own location reccies?
  • Film anything that can create visual links to the location - in this case, we shot mostly on Brighton Pier and thus looked for as many camera opportunities as possible that would link to the location.
  • Sometimes, there are legal limitations to a certain location. It is up to you whether or not you are going to follow those rules or bend them.
